Do You Know Your Cheese? Sargento Natural Cheese vs processed cheese

If you were to ask Lily what her favorite food is, she'd certainly answer with "CHEESE!"

And since cheese is a pretty large part of her diet, I try to make sure I give her good quality cheese, and a variety at that. She certainly loves american cheese, but she also will eat cheddar, swiss, gouda, muenster, and even a gourmet raspberry cheese that my husband got at our local farmer's market.

Before I started working with Sargento, I didn't know too much about cheese. But what I did know is that processed cheese never really sat well in my tummy, but if I ate the "harder" cheeses I never had that problem. And those cheese's that didn't upset my tummy always tasted better and just seemed like they were better quality and worth the higher price tag, I just wasn't so sure why.

Sargento send me a box with a couple of goodies so I could host a little cheese tasting party. Kind of a way to compare the differences of processed cheese and Sargento Natural Cheese.

They also gave me some tips on how to "taste cheese":

1. LOOK at the cheese. A processed cheese will have a shiny appearance, while a natural cheese does not.

2. TOUCH the cheese. A natural cheese will normally break, a processed cheese with artificially pliable and rubbery.

3. SMELL the cheese. Natural cheeses can be described as "earthy", "nutty", or "fruity". Processed cheese doesn't have much of a smell at all.

4. TASTE the cheese. Natural cheeses have an incredible array of flavors, but the dominant characteristic of processed cheese is "salty".

Now after I learned how to properly taste cheese, I realized just how "fake" processed cheese is. Since natural cheese's only contain natural ingredients, like milk, cheese cultures, and salt. It is aged to perfection and one slice of Sargento Cheddar has 130 milligrams of sodium (compared to processed cheese that typically has 250 milligrams of sodium).

When sampling the cheese's, it apparent that everyone preferred the Sargento Natural Cheddar over the processed cheese slices....even this little diva. She knew how to pick out the better quality cheese, without me even having to tell her! LOL

A few not-so-yummy facts about processed cheeses....

~ Processed cheese is made with emulsifiers like Calcium Phosphate, Sodium Citrate, and Sodium Phosphate
~ Some processed cheeses sit on a store shelf for MONTHS w/o refrigeration before being sold
~Often is pumped into plastic packaging as a liquid and run over a series of rollers to form a slice

I don't know about you, but after learning everything I did about the comparisons between natural cheeses and processed cheeses, I am certainly grabbing for the natural cheese in a heartbeat when I go grocery shopping. How about you? Have you ever thought that much about what your cheese is made of?

Marie Callender's #under500 Meals "Tricks to Getting Kids to Eat Healthy"

I didn't eat very good as a child. Honestly, I don't remember much about meals and food choices from when I was a kid. My two most vivid memories surrounding food would be my grandma's chocolate chip cookies and my best friends mom's cooking, which was always a well-balanced variety of foods I barely ever saw at my own house.

My parents divorced when I was young, and my mother didn't have much money to feed us. Meals of hot dogs, macaroni & cheese and peanut butter jelly sandwiches were the norm. I don't blame my mom, she did her best, I know that, but I don't remember many meals that introduced me to new foods. This is probably the exact reason why I grew into a very picky eater, and continued to be one as an adult. It wasn't until I met my husband and started eating meals at his parents house that I started eating new foods (because what new girlfriend won't eat her new boyfriend's mom's cooking? LOL).

I always said I would do my best as a parent to make sure my kids got a variety of foods introduced to them, but it's hard when you yourself don't like that many foods. So I blame myself for my kids pickiness in eating. Jonah won't touch a vegetable with a ten-foot pole. A few weeks ago, I FORCED him to eat one small bite of a green bean and he puked on the kitchen table. I KID YOU NOT! And Lily, well, she has a love-hate relationship with food, and every day can be a new discovery of her hating something she always liked, or vice versa. Ah, the games we play at meal time!

I have tried a variety of tricks to get the kids to eat something, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have found if I sort of "white lie" sometimes works, like calling a less desirable food "cake" or "candy", Lily will sometimes fall for that. Or hiding something healthy in something yummy, like veggies in brownies or veggies in spaghetti sauce. Or sometimes, a good old fashioned bribe "if you eat 3 bits of ______, you can have ice cream", that is our biggest winner around here! I just know it's not what your child eats in ONE day that matters, it's better to look at what they have eaten over the last week or so when it comes to making sure they get the proper nutrition they need.

I do like the fact that I can eat good foods without sabotaging my belly (or my pant size) because Marie Callender's makes it so easy and convenient. I love the variety there is to choose from at my local grocer when it comes to their under 500 calorie meals. This week I tried the Honey Roasted Turkey Breast (I ate it so fast, I forgot to take a picture!) and again, like the two weeks past, I was pleasantly surprised by how yummy the meal was. The turkey was tender and the cheddar-bacon mashed potatoes were SO GOOD!

I love how my kids will ask what I'm eating when I make myself a Marie Callender's meal. Every once in a while, they will ask to try it. Lily loved the potatoes, so I am thinking about finding a recipe to make up a whole batch for a family meal sometime soon.

Don't forget, you can learn more about Marie Callender's #under500 Meals and even print yourself a coupon on their website!

Marie Callender's #under500 Meals "Proper Portions"

The two foods that I absolutely, always overindulge myself on are Sweet & Sour Chicken from our local chinese restaurant, and cheese sticks from Papa John's Pizza. When it comes to our favorite foods, we all have our weaknesses, right?

And the kids could easily overindulge on all of the foods that aren't so good for them, too. Teaching proper portion control at a young age is so important. You know as well as I do, habits are very easy to form, but very hard to break. If we can teach kids good eating habits while they are young and we as parents are in more control of what they eat, it could hopefully help them make better nutritional decisions when they are older and we don't always know what they have at any given meal.

And speaking about portions, that's one of the awesome things about Marie Callender's #under500 Meals, the portions are perfect! And when I say perfect, I certainly don't mean that these meals are teeny-tiny portions, just so they can keep under 500 calories! The meal I tried out this week was the Three Cheese Stuffed Rigatoni & Chicken and the meal certainly didn't skimp, it filled up a nice sized bowl, as well as my belly!

This being the second week I've gotten to try a Marie Callender's #under500 meal, I am yet again shocked at how yummy and filling the meal is. And it smelled delicious too!

Scott Naturals 4 Week Test Drive ~ Week 4 GIVEAWAY

Congrats to Week 3 Winner

Recently, I have stumbled upon a new product that has made a big difference in our home and to the environment. And I figured since we have been spending all month talking about caring for our environment and doing whatever we can to preserve this Mother Earth of ours for generations to come, I figured, "Why NOT share it with you guys?"

The Filtrete Water Station by 3M quickly and easily make 4 bottles of water in record time. I quickly fill them up and store them in the refrigerator to quickly grab while running out the door or to grab a drink at any time of day. Now, I'm not gonna turn this into a product review post, but I will say I love how this has reduced our plastic bottle usage, therefore eliminating how many plastic bottles we throw out. Did you know it takes ONE plastic bottle 700 YEARS to decompose in a landfill??? Almost every hour, 250,000 plastic bottles are dumped into landfills too! Those are some CRAZY statistics and I am happy that we are able to avoid being a part of it!

I know making a BIG difference can be tough, but there is ONE thing you can do that is so easy and simple! Do me a favor, and click over to the Scott Naturals website. With each unique click, Scott is donating $1 to the National Wildlife Federation. Our goal is 25,000 for $25,000 and we need your help to achieve this!! So easy and simple! Ask your friends to help too? That'd be awesome!

And of course, while there, be sure to enter to win a Ford Fusion Hybrid! You can enter all the way up through September 30, 2011!

Scott Naturals 4 Week Test Drive ~ Week 3 GIVEAWAY

Congrats to Week 2 Winner

Everyone in our house has been pretty sick this week. We were plagued with the nastiest of all stomach bugs, the rotavirus. IT pretty much knocked Jonah (my 4yo) and myself completely out of commission and recovery has been slow.....so slow. I must say though, that never before had I been grateful for a few products like those from Scott Naturals. I won't go into the details, but you can probably imagine how much toilet paper, paper towels and wet wipes we have gone through in this past week. It's the little things that count at times like this. I highly recommend these products, especially in times like these.

Wanna get your hands on some of these products too, at no cost to you? Because Scott Naturals and The Motherhood are giving away a prize pack, just like I received to one of you! All you have to do it visit the Scott Naturals website and pledge to participate in the 4 week test drive. And while you are there, enter to win a ford Fusion Hybrid Sedan, a super cool car I have been looking into!
1. Go to the Scott website and PLEDGE to take the 4-Week Challenge!

2. Enter to win the Ford Fusion Hybrid Sedan (this is not required, but hey, why not right?!)

3. Come back here and tell something (in the comments section) your family does to help the environment, small or large, every little bit counts! Be sure to leave an email address or email me at mommyinstincts AT gmail DOT com with your contact info if you don't want to share it publicly. I need to be able to get ahold of you in the event you WIN!

Scott Natural's 4 Week Test Drive ~ Week 2 (GIVEAWAY!)

My kids and I are certainly the outdoorsy type. We like to get out and play and explore and go on adventures, even in our own backyard. Since the kids are only 2 and 4, we can't be too daring in our endeavors, but even the simplest tasks can and usually are, fun!

One excellent resource for ideas when it comes to getting outside is the National Wildlife Federation website. There you can simply enter in a topic or issue you are interested in exploring that day. For example, say I wanted to teach the kids about birds today. I enter the word "birds" into the "Be Out There" Activity Finder and it will pop up a list of activity suggestions. The BEST part of this is that it will also tell you the "participant age", so you can judge right from the title if it is an activity that will fit your kids abilities.

If you aren't quite sure what you want to explore today, you can do an Advanced Search and look up by "age", "cost", "difficulty" and so on.

With Earth Day tomorrow (and the promise of a yucky, rainy day), I am having to revamp my plans for us (have you seen my B Kind 2 Earth Day post??). So I was able to look through the NWF activities and find a few alternatives for us to still do our part, without going out in the rain. I am now considering making a Homemade Suet Feeder with the kids instead.

I also am checking out The B Kind 2 Earth Day's Facebook page, to find idea's from other people on ways to celebrate Earth Day as well.

WIN IT! AGAIN!!
Scott Naturals is giving away kit to another Mommy Instincts reader! All you have to do is visit the Scott Brand 4 Week Test Drive site and pledge to participate. Once you do that, come back here and let me know! For every unique click through to this page, Scott Natural's will donate $1 to the National Wildlife Foundation (up to $25,000).

** Earn an extra entry by telling me what you are doing for Mother Earth on her special day this year!

While there you can also enter to win a Ford Fusion Hybrid Sedan!

B Kind 2 Earth Day

It isn't a secret that we, as a whole, need to do things (big things, little things.....) every day to make a difference to our Mother Earth. And myself, being a Mom of two little ones, I love finding ways to involve them in my efforts to make the Earth a longer-lasting and more beautiful place, for us today, for them tomorrow, and their own children in the future.

I am teaming up with my BFF's over at The Motherhood and have dedicated myself to being a State Leader here in my home state on Indiana. And you can join in too! Visit the B Kind 2 Earth Day Facebook page, and LIKE it! Our goal is to get 75 people in EACH state to LIKE and promise to do at least one good deed on Earth Day to help preserve and maintain our planet. It's as simple as that!

And since Earth Day is this Friday, April 22, 2011, I have decided to share with you a few of the things my family and I do on a regular and mostly daily basis to do our share. Every small action counts!

1. We use reusable towels as much as possible. It takes a long time to go through just ONE roll of paper towel in our house!
2. We use otherwise throw items for craft projects. Puzzles out of cereal boxes, cardboard bugs out of egg cartons, and make-believe TV's out of large boxes.
3. I use dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. It reduces the amount of time needed to dry as well as keeps those nasty dryer sheets out of our house.
4. We frequent the Goodwill Store, to buy "new-to-us" items, as well as donate/recycle items we no longer use.
5. We walk to the grocery store (those double seater Radio Flyer wagons are awesome for this!)

What kinds of things do you do on a daily basis to help reduce YOUR carbon footprint? Do you have any special plans for Earth Day?

Come back on Friday for more ways on how our family does our part as well as to learn more about the B Kind 2 Earth Day initiative!

Scott Natural's 4 Week Test Drive ~ Week 1 (GIVEAWAY!)

Ever since having children, I have found that I have taken the more natural approach to many things in our lives. Such as cleaning products, recycling, bath products, diapers, and even medicine. So you can only imagine how excited I was to ask to be part of the Scott Natural's 4 Week Test Drive, and in turn be able to share it with you all of you. Scott is doing a number of really amazing things that we can all be a part of, and who doesn't love giving a little and getting a little (I have a giveaway for you!)

When cleaning around our home, I try my best to use products that are kid and pet friendly, as well as friendly on Mother Earth. We use all-natural brands for cleaning countertops, bathtubs, sinks, windows, floors, and even our clothing. The direct benefit is I am not worried about how my children's skin will react to the gentle, but perfume-free and dye-free detergents that clean their clothes. With two kids with sensitive skin, it's important to be careful of such things. And better yet, with eco-friendly becoming such a trend these days, you can easily pick these products up at your local grocery store, Target, Wal-Mart, and so on.

Like I said, Scott has some cool things going on. By visiting their website and pledging to take the 4-week challenge, you will first off be a part of possibly saving over 2 million trees! By using Scott Naturals paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, and flushable moist wipes for 4 weeks, you may not see the difference, but the environment will! (You can even get yourself some coupons!)

I was also really excited about this campaign because of how Scott Naturals is helping the animals! For every unique click to taking the pledge, Scott Naturals will donate $1 to National Wildlife Federation (up to $25,000). How awesome that a simple click could generate funds to such a great cause?

And as if all that wasn't enough, there is something in it for you!

Scott is giving away a Ford Fusion Hybrid Sedan to one lucky winner! I adore this car, and maybe when I am past my mini-van stage I will look into getting one! When you take the pledge, you will also find a place on the page where you can enter to win! You can enter once a day through 9/23/2011.
And for one lucky Mommy Instincts winner, I have a Scott Naturals Kit! Here's how you can win!
1. Go to the Scott website and PLEDGE to take the 4-Week Challenge!

2. Enter to win the Ford Fusion Hybrid Sedan (this is not required, but hey, why not right?!)

4. Come back here and tell something (in the comments section) your family does to help the environment, small or large, every little bit counts! Be sure to leave an email address or email me at mommyinstincts AT gmail DOT com with your contact info if you don't want to share it publicly.
